Roger Wonnacott
Personal history
I was born and raised in glorious Devon, where I still currently live with my wife Helen and Basil the beloved tabby cat!
Educated at Okehampton comprehensive school/college, where key subjects included art and technical/engineering drawing which I studied at `O` and `A` level.
Having left school I began a career in estate agency which lasted for about 20 years. After so many years in the `pressure cooker` my health took a turn for the worse which resulted in essential changes to my life. It was at this low point that a journey of self discovery began. During the following years I developed a new sense of optimism, satisfaction and of well being ,initially through the therapeutic benefits of immersing myself in painting. Life is a journey with ups and downs. Through painting I am now focussed on the `ups` and understand how rewarding it can be to both observer and artist.
I paint mostly in the acrylic medium using various techniques to apply the paint to canvas and am always experimenting with new methods. I like to paint freely and usually in a fairly loose style, perhaps edging towards impressionistic. An occasional drift towards abstract expression are the result of complicated or chaotic moods.
The amazing open space and dramatic scenery that is the coastline of Devon and Cornwall, together with associated coastal ways of life, memories from travel and holidays provide much of my inspiration.
I am a regular exhibitor across south and east Devon with annual submissions to London shows. My work and reputation has developed over the last couple of years and has appealed to collectors as far a field as the USA and Spain. Regular commissioned pieces now form a rewarding part of my portfolio.

ARTISTS STATEMENT
I believe that art is something that can be enjoyed by everyone. Not just those who have extravagant taste and a budget to match. An original work of art is something that should be cherished, be it for its obvious beauty or for its thought provoking quality. Each and every original work of art is a creation that is always unique and although sometimes copied, can never be exactly recreated. (for a start the time and space will never happen again). Art can provoke conversation and discussion between people from all backgrounds and cultures.
I recall being fascinated observing a blind man being guided around a prestigious art exhibition. His guide was relaying rich descriptions of each painting which no doubt enabled the man to recreate his own vivid impression in his mind. His sense of touch enabled him to appreciate fully the sculptural work on show. I watched for some time. His concentration and reaction to the descriptions he was given made it clear that some he liked and others he did not.
How inspiring it is to understand that art can truly reach those with seemingly impossible hurdles in front of them.
Through my own work I endeavour to evoke memories and hope that that this leads to conversation between viewers. As an artist, this is perhaps the most challenging and yet rewarding aspect of my occupation.
