Lee Englund

Lee Englund Biography

Plein-air painter Lee Englund paints exclusively from life. Lee started drawing at a very early age, and has been oil painting for over forty years.

Lee's paintings are an emotional response to what he observes. His love of nature and art have given him a passion for painting the landscape on location which offers him a challenge he cannot resist. Lee tries to achieve a creative expression in his landscapes, and at the same time interpret a place and a day for the viewer.

He painta in all kinds of weather, at all times of the year, and at all times of the day. When painting "en-plein-air" Lee deals constantly with the elements, the wonders of nature, the fast changing light, weather conditions, and sometimes bugs! Painting from life is a pursuit unlike any other painting technique, and each painting is an expression of this. It is Lee a spiritual endeavor, and he believes that the process is as important as the product.

Lee has studied graduate painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin, Superior, and holds a BFA and BAA from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. For the past twenty-plus years, he has taught drawing and painting in the Duluth Public Schools, private lessons, and a variety of workshops in the United States. Lee has studied with a number of other prominent painters such as Robert Hoffman, Joe Paquet, and David Leffel. Lee is a member of Oil Painters of America and National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society.

His work has been accepted into many regional, national, and international juried art shows in which he has been the recipient of several awards.
