Annie Soudain

Born near Dover in Kent; early childhood spent in Truro, Cornwall. Attended school in Dover before studying art for four years at Canterbury College of Art.

Took art teacher’s diploma at BrightonCollege of Art and subsequently taught art in Brighton (WestlainGrammar School). Left to have three children, living for several years on boats in England and France and settling by the sea in Sussex.

Exhibits with the Rye Society of Artists, the Society of Botanical Artists, the Sussex Guild, SOCO, and at local galleries. Work in private collections in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA.

First one-person show at the Casson Gallery, EastbourneCollege, September-October 1992.

Two exhibitions at KirstenKjaersMuseum, Frøstrup, Denmark, summer 1994 and summer 1997.

Featured in the ‘Homeground’ exhibition in Rye, East Sussex, in 1995.
One-person shows at the Stables Theatre Gallery, Hastings (1997 and 2001), London’s Barbican Library (1998 and 2002), and the Metropole Arts Centre, Folkestone (2000).

Has featured in many exhibitions in Henry Paddon’s Eastbourne gallery, Paddon & Paddon, and is regularly represented in FLORUM, an annual exhibition of floral and botanical painting held in Sevenoaks. 

Featured in the 3-year anniversary exhibition at The Stratton Gallery, Hastings, June-July 2006. 

Has work permanently on display in the Sussex Guild shop, Southover Grange, Lewes.

Winner of the Frisk/Talens Purchase Prize at the 1992 ‘Art in Nature’ exhibition. 

Regular artist-in-residence at Nature in Art (the International Centre for Wildlife Art), Gloucester. 

Elected a member of the Society of Botanical Artists (SBA) in March 1995.

Commissioned to paint 6 panels for cruise liner Saga Rose; these were installed in May and December 1997 and still adorn the ship.
October 1998: work commissioned by the National Trust.

Commissioned to decorate a life-size fibreglass cow for CowParade London 2002. ‘Dawn Cowrus’ (Annie covered the cow with birds) stood in the grounds of the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood throughout the summer and autumn of 2002; voted ‘CowParade Champion’ in a Farmer's Weekly poll, it was auctioned at the November 2002 Royal Smithfield Show to raise money for charity.

Annie Soudain enjoys painting in watercolour, gouache, and silk dyes (wax-resist), also printmaking — mostly linocuts, using various techniques; fabric collage is another favourite medium.
